New Delhi: Finally, on Wednesday, Delhi has a mayor after three failed efforts over the past two and a half months since the MCD polls. Aam Aadmi Party candidate Shelly Oberoi easily defeated BJP's Rekha Gupta.
As Oberoi beat Gupta by a margin of 34 votes, Aaley Mohammad Iqbal of the AAP was elected as deputy mayor with a margin of 31 votes. Taking aim at the BJP, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal declared the results a win for the people of Delhi and claimed that the party's "goons" had been shown to be no match for the people.
While voting for mayor and deputy mayor went off without a hitch, the election of the six members of the MCD House's Standing Committee caused a disturbance.—Inputs from Agencies
